We would like to bring to your attention that climate change is affecting us all. Weather patterns have changed dramatically in the last 50 years. We are experiencing prolonged dry periods followed by heavy storms. This has a massive bearing on our drainage infrastructure, especially in urban areas, as surface water run off generated by rainwater is collected through our sewer system and then drains into culverts, water course and rivers. The level of intensity of rainfall in a short period means that the infrastructure cannot cope with the velocity in which the rainwater collects and passes through the drainage system. This is affecting localised systems, causing flooding, and putting added pressure on our rivers.
Clear Drains has found that the older buildings/estates have increasingly been experiencing flooding and water ingress due to the calculations of rainfall being much lower at build stage between the 1950s and 1970s. For example, allowances were not made for the deluge of rain that falls today and sizing of pipework. Gutters and drainage were also much smaller in capacity. With newer builds today, sustainable urban drainage systems are put in place, as attenuation tanks, balance ponds, flow restrictions and syphonic gutter systems are installed to help combat the increased rainfall.
It is important that this is recognised across any buildings so we can understand what buildings and estates are at risk and what localised areas are susceptible to flooding. Information can be gained from the Environment Agency flood risk mapping online and having a good knowledge of localised drainage systems.
Clear Drains UK Ltd has been working hard to combat the effects of climate change on the drainage systems by carrying out regular Preplanned Maintenance within demise areas and shared gutter systems. It is important to keep these systems clean and free flowing. Building managers should be aware of their duty of care to make sure their demised drainage systems from roof gutters to their landlord's areas are cleaned regularly.
Landlords, Tenants and domestic should be aware that any internal manholes, downpipes and rodding eyes are sealed to make sure water backs up through the system and pours out of overflows. Any potential weakness within the systems above ground could be susceptible to water ingress.
